Hi Guys,
This is the second part guide on how to obtain a drivers license in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Happily, I passed the Theory Examination (yehey!!), although I am a little bit nervous at first because I haven't study that hard, but praise God, I exceeded the passing score (not bragging about it though).
After passing the theory exam, you need to book for practical classes. The customer service will asked you if you are a beginner or know some stuff in driving.
If you have knowledge in driving you can choose whether to ask for an assessment or start as a beginner. This assessment test will assess you (obviously) of how well you know driving. But you have to pay extra for this, I think AED 50 or more (not really sure about the fee, because I made up my mind to start from scratch). Once your assessment is done, they will recommend classes you need to attend. You may skip other classes based on your assessment, this will mean extra savings because you just have to pay for the classes they recommended you.
If you are a beginner (like me) or have little knowledge in driving, you will have to take all the lessons. There are 15 lessons. But they will initially give you 12 classes, then if you successfully passed areas 1 - 4, you will have to book for area 5. If not, the instructor might recommend you to take additional classes (you have to pay extra for this).
First, I have 12 lessons, with 1 hour duration (normal) which cost me AED 2,300 (this fee covers all areas 1-5). You have a choice if you want it to be a special class (2 hours) in which you have to pay additional AED 200.
I have also arranged for a bus pick-up service (Abu Dhabi - EDC) which I paid at AED 100. I am working in Mussafah area so when the class is finished, I could travel directly from EDC to our office (so I don't need drop-off service). The bus service (pick-up & drop-off) could be arranged during your practical class booking.
E. Practical Class: In the practical class, you will be taught the basic of driving (complimenting the lessons you have learned in the theory classes). This time, it will be the real thing. You will have a teacher/ trainer who would teach you one-on-one in the yard area. The practical classes will comprise of Areas and Tower exercises. Here you will have a feel on how to be like on the road.
F. Yard Test: Once you completed the practical class, you will be scheduled for the Yard Test (Parking Test). When you passed this test, they will give you a training card, which will be like your pass so you could start practicing on real the road, with an licensed instructor.
G. Road Test: The final stage but not the least and being dreaded by many. Two police officers will seat with you on the car, then you are instructed to follow their directions. Here you have to be careful although you will feel nervous.
Hope that this guide helps you one way or the other.
